Media Studies

141

7 – 11 Media Studies

Who taught you what to think? Who whispered that opinion in your ear? If your answer was ‘no one’, the real answer is probably the media. It shapes our world, our thinking, our reality… and it lives in your pocket. Every day, we consume hours of media and too often, we are unaware how much it affects us. It is our goal to make you aware, to make sure that no one can pull the wool over your eyes.

This contemporary, accessible and creative course will allow learners to study the media in an academic context and apply the knowledge and understanding gained in the process of creating their own media production. The course is academically rigorous and akin to English in its approach. We also will ensure that you use a range of industry standard software in your practical assignments including professional HD DV video cameras, SLR digital cameras and a fully functioning Mac editing suite equipped with the full range of Adobe software programmes such as Photoshop. We also have two industry standard editing packages, Final Cut Pro and Premiere Pro, to create your own fully realised media products.

GCSE Media Studies is incredibly popular and is best suited to students who are interested in the media (film, television, radio, and print), current affairs and popular culture. You must be able to write fluently and analytically. Media Studies shares a lot in common with English in that it builds upon the analytical skills learned in the subject to gain a deeper understanding of how meaning is constructed within the world around us.It is also suited to those who enjoy working visually and undertaking practical elements. The controlled assessment element is worth 30% of the total mark, so it requires organisational skills and the ability to meet regular deadlines. Ultimately Media Studies is both a rewarding and challenging subject that requires a student that is independent, thoughtful, and eager to learn about the world around them.

Media

Skills Gained

Learners will create media products through applying knowledge and understanding of media language and representation from the theoretical framework to express and communicate meaning to an intended audience.

Learners will explore how media products follow generic conventions, use media language, represent events, issues, places, individuals and social groups, address audiences and reflect their industrial context.

Learners will explore the range of media forms to exemplify media industry issues demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of the theoretical framework (media language, representation, audiences and media industries) as it applies to each form.

Learners will apply the theoretical framework and theoretical perspectives to three in-depth studies.
