Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

The Government has made available to all maintained schools the Pupil Premium Grant. This grant is aimed at supporting the outcomes for students who are, or have been in the last six years, eligible for free school meals (FSM), or students who are in the care of the local authority (CLA – Children Looked After). Eligibility for FSM is not in itself intended to be a judgement of any individual student’s ability, potential or likely outcomes. Statistically, nationally, there is a strong correlation between eligibility for FSM and lower achievement and outcomes below expectations. It should be emphasised that many of our students who are eligible for FSM achieve in line with or ahead of their non-FSM peers. We also work hard to ensure these students receive the appropriate level of support to ensure they achieve high level outcomes too. FSM is not an exact measure, but it is the best available for targeting additional recourses, which schools are expected to use strategically in their own contexts to support the students that they have who are eligible and may be vulnerable to disengagement, poor attendance, low aspirations or outcomes below expectations.
