Art

‘Art has the power to make us look at the world in a different way – we all need to use this power!’

Ms Samuels (Head of Art)

Humans have always been driven by visual stimulus – it is the way we absorb and make sense of the world around us. To be able to understand and communicate with others, and to dive into the semiotics of it, you need visual language skills.

Our Hammersmith Academy artists are encouraged to think conceptually about communicating ideas in art, along with learning the technical skills to deliver these messages. All students start their Key Stage 3 taking a journey through Art History, from Pre-Historic to Conceptual and Community Art, alongside focusing on the technical skills of drawing, painting and 3D sculpting. We apply these core skills to a contextual setting – moving from theory to real life as the students’ experience it. Students appreciate the importance of art and understand it as a remarkable mode of exploring and understanding culture from all over the world.

At GCSE level and beyond we inspire and challenge students to pave their own path, using the technical skills they have developed in Key Stage 3 to communicate their ideas, values and passions through the medium of art. The art rooms, including the extensive Art Library launched in 2022, are a hub of creativity allowing students to learn and develop as young artists.
