A Level Economics

Economics encourages the development and understanding of economic concepts and theories through considering current economic issues and problems that affect everyday life.

Studying economics gives an applied understanding of a wide range of current issues, from the effectiveness of government policy, to the cause of poverty in developing countries. Not only does the course allow the transfer of knowledge, it provides opportunities for skills to be developed and put into practice. Research skills, data analysis, problem solving, communication and working with others, are all important in the study of Economics.

Students will apply, analyse and evaluate different concepts and theories with the aim of appreciating their value and limitations in explaining real-world events. The course provides opportunities to explore data from local, national and international sources, enhancing the ability to develop a critical approach to economic models and methods of enquiry.

Exam Board: AQA

Entry Requirements: Eight or more GCSEs at grades 9-4 including GCSE English, including a minimum grade 6 in English and Mathematics. If Economics has been studied at GCSE, this will be an advantage.

Skills Gained

  • Use of technical skills to support analysis e.g. through use of diagrams
  • Analyse qualitative and quantitative data
  • Think critically about the limits of one’s analysis in a broader socio-economic context
  • Draw economic policy inferences and to recognise the potential constraints in their implementation
