The Insight Programme

Insight Programme

The HA Insight Programme is a weekly line-up of inspirational speakers for our Sixth Form. In 2015/16, we have had 22 speakers, covering a range of subjects and ideas from upfront motivational messages to specific careers insight and political activism. It is part of a range of initiatives aimed at building a universal expectation amongst our students that high level ambitions can be realised, to give them a wider range of skills and ideas to access higher education, and in particular the top universities. We want to compensate for disadvantage and to level the independent school playing field, by providing opportunities for them to access a wider range of communities, opportunities and intellectual challenges. Inspirational speakers bring that insight; they throw open windows into other unknown worlds, giving our students the sense of permission and entitlement that they need in order to compete on a level with more socially privileged students. But it’s also about making sure that they have a firm grasp on human rights and responsibilities, ensuring that they are well-prepared to participate fully in local and global communities and helping them to become rounded and reflective human-beings.

The talks all take place on a Wednesday lunchtimes – between 12.30pm – 1.00pm – and comprise a 30 minute presentation to about 100/150 sixth form students, followed by a 30 minute lunch and chat (with a smaller group of 10/15 interested students) format.

Standout quote “It is part of a range of initiatives aimed at building a universal expectation amongst our students that high level ambitions can be realised, to give them a wider range of skills and ideas to access higher education, and in particular the top universities”.

Andrew Muhammad and Florence Adepolu (MDM Flow)

2015-16

Last year we had 22 speakers (an increase of 50% on the previous year’s programme) covering a range of subjects and ideas from upfront motivational messages to specific careers insight and political activism.

Speakers have included: Natalie Mitchell, writer for stage, radio and tv (including East Enders); Andy Slaughter, MP for Hammersmith & Fulham; Florence Adepoju (aka MDM Flow), make-up entrepreneur; and Anthony Watson CEO.

The runaway success of the year was Andrew Muhammad, the self-titled Investigator, a professional motivational speaker who spoke to the students on the theme of Attitude = Altitude, contrasting his disastrous school career with his subsequent success fuelled by the realisation that if you believe you can achieve. The students clearly responded to his humour and catch phrases with 29 of them asking if he could return again in 2016/17.
