What’s unique about HA Science?

At Hammersmith Academy all our Science teachers are specialists in either Physics, Biology or Chemistry. Our classrooms are purpose built labs designed for collaborative learning. Science takes up an entire floor within the HA building and boasts panoramic views of London and state-of-the-art equipment provided through generous Mercers’ funding – with a commitment to maintaining and keeping up-to-date over time. We also have a science garden, tended by students and teachers, and a terrace for summer revision activities.

Recent adventures in Science

We have set up an astronomy club, a practical science club, and a gardening club. Students got the opportunity to be a zookeeper for a day at Whipsnade Zoo. We visited: the Centre of the Cell experience (the first science education centre in the world to be located within working biomedical research laboratories); the Royal Observatory; the Wellcome Trust forensics exhibition; the Wetland Centre; and Kew Gardens. We made a global warming documentary at Sky Studios, Girls in Science visited: the London Transport Museum and the Imperial University Science Department trip, we had professionals give science-based career advice, HA Physics visited Radio 4 and appeared on The Life Scientific with Jim Al-Khalili and we also met Tim Peake! HA also regularly perform live web chats with scientists, giving the students the chance to pose questions and vote for their favourite.

Recent successes by the Science Department

We entered a team into the London-wide Royal Academy of Engineering competition and came third; our students organised an interactive KS2 Science fair; we had Year 11 students selected by the Sutton Trust to attend a prestigious Medical Summer School; one of our students won the Jack Petchy Achievement Award and donated the winnings to the Science department; Hammersmith Academy students have gone on to successfully study Medicine, Physics, Engineering, Biosciences, Chemical engineering and Pharmacology.
